Mead is a fermented beverage made from two primary ingredients - honey and water, and is quite possibly the oldest fermented beverage in the world!
The recipient of the award for mankind's oldest fermented beverage is a hot topic of debate amongst fans, although most evidence suggests that mead is the oldest - Chinese pottery vessels dating from 7000 B.C.E. suggest evidence of mead fermentation. That predates both wine and beer! Evidence of mead has been found in king Tut's tomb, along with his other riches, and the ancient Greeks, who called mead ambrosia or nectar, believed it to be the drink of the gods, descended from the Heavens as dew, before being gathered in by the bees. And no-one can dispute the influence of mead in Viking history and mythology. Odin, the All-Father was said to consume only mead, which, for him, was both food and drink! Mead has definitely been with us since the dawn of history, with evidence of it in many cultures!
While often referred to as honey wine, that’s not entirely accurate. Made with honey, rather than fruit, mead exists in its own category of alcoholic beverage. It is neither wine, nor beer. It is mead! Even mead that is flavored with fruit, grains, or spices is not considered wine.
